E’ il racconto breve di un caso di cronaca realmente accaduto nell’aprile del 1942 a Payerne, un villaggio del cantone svizzero di Vaud, dove fin dagli anni trenta si era diffuso il veleno dell’antisemitismo. E’ un'atroce pagina di storia narrata da uno scrittore che all’epoca dei fatti aveva solo otto anni e andava a scuola con i figli degli assassini. Un giorno un gruppo di nazisti locali decide di uccidere un ebreo, per mostrare ai "parassiti giudei" il destino che li aspettava. La vittima fu un ricco mercante, massacrato in un delirio di violenza e atrocità.
Quel crimine ha continuato ad ossessionarlo per tutta la vita, tanto che alla fine ne ha tratto un romanzo duro ed essenziale, dove la condanna dell'antisemitismo si trasforma in meditazione sul male assoluto.
