http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/323887.html IDF court sentenced Ahmed Barghouti to 13 life sentences. A military court at the Ofer military base outside of the West Bank city of Ramallah, sentenced Ahmed Barghouti, a senior Palestinian militant, to 13 life sentences Wednesday, after convicting him of orchestrating attacks that killed 12 Israelis. Barghouti is a cousin and close associate of senior Fatah West Bank leader Marwan Barghouti, standing trial in Israel for planning deadly terror attacks. Ahmed Barghouti, 27, was convicted of 52 counts related to militant activity, including planning several terror attacks and dispatching suicide bombers who carried out attacks in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Wearing a brown prison jumpsuit, Barghouti was unrepentant, telling reporters before his sentencing that had he not been caught he would have continued to orchestrate attacks. Barghouti also affirmed his loyalty to his cousin, whom many view as a possible future Palestinian leader. Barghouti's attorney Ahmed Safia said Wednesday morning that he had petitioned the court to dismiss the case, arguing that his client had been arrested in Area A, which according to past peace accords is under Palestinian security and civilian control. Safia said he expected the court to hand Barghouti a harsh sentence. The harsh sentence does not bode well for Marwan Barghouti, who faces similar charges of orchestrating attacks while serving as the head of Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction in the West Bank. Marwan Barghouti has refused to cooperate or conduct a defense during his trial, claiming that Israel does not have the jurisdiction to try him because he is a Palestinian parliament member.
