Two Israeli women were seriously injured at around 12pm on Friday, according to Israel Radio. Their car was shot at near Beitilo Junction west of Binyamin, near the Nechaliel settlements nortwest of Ramallah.

Powell urges Palestinian groups to stop attacks Diplomats plan Jordan meeting to salvage 'road map' to peace
WASHINGTON (CNN) --In an attempt to keep a surge of violence from derailing the "road map" to Mideast peace, U.S. officials are working to persuade Palestinian militant groups to end their attacks, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Friday.
"All of our efforts are focused on Hamas, and persuading Hamas and Islamic Jihad and other terrorist organizations that this is the time to abandon terror," Powell said.
Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice have called Arab leaders in hopes of persuading them to cut off political and financial support to Hamas.
"We hope anyone who claims or pretends to represent the interests of the Palestinian people and is interested in the creation of a state for Palestinian people will listen to the pleas from the international community to end this kind of activity, so we can get going," he said.
Israelis and Palestinians are mourning victims of a week of violence that has killed more than 50 people.
Jerusalem was the scene of another terror attack Wednesday when 17 people were killed in a suicide bus bombing, and this week Israel launched five airstrikes in Gaza that it said targeted Islamic militants.
Twenty-three people, including five Israeli soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks, while 28 Palestinians died, including some members of Hamas as well as civilians. One of the dead was the suicide bomber in Jerusalem.
Saying "Hamas is our al Qaeda," one senior Israeli official asserted that "it's an all-out war." In turn, the militant group issued a leaflet saying the Jerusalem bus attack was just the "beginning" of its offensive against all Israelis....
Powell urges Abbas to restrain terrorists The Associated Press Jun. 13, 2003
Secretary of State Colin Powell urged Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Thursday to move faster to restrain terrorist groups. "We want him to use that limited capability as effectively as he can," Powell told The Associated Press.
In an interview minutes after back-to-back telephone calls to Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Powell said, "We are going to keep moving to peace."
He also said that the U.S.-backed road map for getting there is intact despite a sustained outbreak of violence and that both leaders were still committed to moving forward.
"All of us can get together and apply pressure on Hamas, the Islamic Jihad and other organizations responsible for this kind of terror," he said.
In the interview in a reception room near his State Department office, Powell credited Sharon with dismantling some West Bank settlement outposts and taking other steps to implement the road map.
As for Abbas, who Israel insists has not taken direct action against Palestinian terror groups, Powell said: "I believe that he can do more. He has said he would do more."
Powell said he had told the Palestinian leader in their telephone conversation, "I expect him to be taking more aggressive steps" despite having some political problems.
On other issues, Powell said:
- He does not believe U.S. credibility has been damaged by the failure of U.S. and British teams to find any of the weapons of mass destruction that the Bush administration said Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had stockpiled. Powell stood by the U.S. claims. "This isn't a figment of someone's imagination," he said. "This isn't something that was overblown or made up in the basement of the CIA late one night. These were real weapons, real programs that Saddam Hussein refused to come forward and explain to the world."
- He takes North Korea at its word that it has developed nuclear weapons but "we will not be frightened into taking action that would not be appropriate." The Bush administration seeks a diplomatic solution "and we feel confident that one can be found."
- Russia, which the administration accuses of providing Iran with advanced technology for its reactor, appears to share U.S. concerns that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. After the International Atomic Energy Agency makes its assessment next week "we will make an assessment, consult with our friends who have an interest in this matter and then see what our next steps should be."
- He agrees with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld that a Belgian law that claims a right to prosecute war crimes committed anywhere makes it difficult for high-ranking U.S. officials to visit NATO (news - web sites) headquarters in Brussels. "The Belgian government knows this is a problem," Powell said. "We are just saying to them ..., 'We hope you can find a solution to it because it does make it a bit awkward.'"
Powell plans to meet in Jordan in about 10 days with leaders of Russia, the European Union and the United Nations on their joint effort to promote peacemaking between Israel and the Palestinians.
In the AP interview, Powell left open the possibility of holding talks in Israel and with the Palestinians on the West Bank, as well.
"I have some flexibility in my schedule, but I haven't made any decision yet," he said. "I'll decide when we get closer."
His meeting in Jordan with U.N., Russian and European Union officials will be held at the end of a trip next week to Cambodia for an Asia conference and to Bangladesh. Amman, the capital of Jordan, is the likely site, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said.
Before telephoning Abbas and Sharon, Powell spoke by phone to Foreign Ministers Silvan Shalom of Israel, Ahmed Maher of Egypt, Saud al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia and Marwan Muasher of Jordan to appeal for help in stemming the violence in the region.
At the Saudi Embassy, Adel al-Jubeir, a Saudi foreign policy adviser, said the kingdom was moving ahead to counter terrorism in the area.
He said 1,000 suspects had been questioned, more than 300 arrested and almost 100 were awaiting trial. "Al-Qaida will find it increasingly difficult ot find safe haven inside Saudi Arabia," the Saudi official said.
Powell plans to fly to Jordan from Bangladesh June 19 and while there attend the World Economic Forum at the Dead Sea city along with Robert Zoellick, the U.S. trade representative.
It was in Jordan last week that President Bush reached agreement with Sharon and Abbas to proceed with the peacemaking blueprint that had been prepared jointly by the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia.
Powell will be joined in Jordan by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and senior officials of the European Union.
The informal group, known as the Quartet, called for an end to 33 months of conflict, establishment of a Palestinian state by 2005 and other measures designed to settle the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/13/international/middleeast/13CND-MIDE.html June 13, 2003 Israel Presses Its Assault on Hamas, Attacking Car in Gaza By IAN FISHER
JERUSALEM, June 13 — Israel continued its forceful press against the Islamic militant group Hamas tonight as at least one attack helicopter launched missiles again in Gaza, a day before American monitors were scheduled to arrive here to prop up a new peace plan now badly weakened by nearly a week of violence.
At least one person was reported killed in the helicopter's attack on a car in Gaza City, which the Israeli military said was carrying Hamas militants who had fired rockets into the Israeli town of Sderot earlier in the day. About 22 more Palestinians, almost all civilians, among them about seven children, were injured, and the city's main hospital was overwhelmed with bloodied victims of the attack....
IDF hits terrorists in Gaza who were preparing Kassam attack Joel Leyden Jun. 13, 2003
The Israel Defense Forces used heliocpters this evening to hit Hamas terrorists in Gaza who were preparing Kassam missile attacks against Israeli civilian populations, a military source told the Jerusalem Post.
Israeli helicopter gunships fired three missiles at a car, killing one person and wounding 22, doctors in Gaza said.
The IDF has attacked Hamas terror leaders and members of the group's military wing in five missile strikes this week.
Four people were in the car targeted Friday, witnesses said. A charred body was pulled from the burning wreckage.
Hamas tentatively identified the dead man as Fuad Ledawi, a member of the Hamas military wing and an assistant to Tito Massoud, another Hamas terrorist killed in an Israeli missile strike earlier in the week.
Dr. Moawiya Hassanain, director of Gaza City's Shifa Hospital, initially said two people were killed, but then revised the death toll to one.
Israel TV's Channel Two said the missiles were fired at a car carrying Palestinian terrorists who earlier in the day had fired Kassam missiles toward Israel.
The report said troops had been following the militants from lookoutposts and then sent helicopters to chase them.
In Brussels, the foreign policy representative of the European Union, Javier Solana, condemned terror attacks by Hamas and warned the group that its foreign backers could face new restrictions in Europe.
On Thursday the US put direct responsibilty on Hamas rather than Israel for the recent upsurge in violence.
"The issue are these relatively small but deadly groups of terrorists who are trying to stop Israel and the Palestinian Authority from coming together at a time when they are, indeed, coming together," White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said. "That's why they strike now. They strike now because they see peace on the horizon, and Hamas is an enemy to peace."
