Israeli-Arab killed in attack on Border Police near Nazareth

Border Police shot and killed one Israeli-Arab and wounded another on the Haifa to Tiberias highway between the Beit Rimon and Turan junctions in the Lower Galilee late on Sunday night after the Israeli-Arabs opened fire on a police patrol.

According to reports, Border Police had sent out a patrol on the road as 'bait' following numerous incidents of firebombs being thrown at Israeli vehicles in the area in the past few weeks.

Police sources said shots were fired at a Border Police patrol vehicle in the area just after 10:20pm. According to reports, the two atackers, both in their twenties, walked infront of the Border Police vehicle, as if they were crossing the road. In the middle of the road, they suddenly turned and opened fire.

The Border Policemen were unhurt and returned fire, charging at the attackers, wounding both of them, one moderately and the other lightly.

The Israeli Arab from Kafr Kanna later died of his wounds in hospital. The man from Kfar Manda remains in a moderately wounded condition. The two were treated at the scene by Magen David Adom paramedics and taken by ambulance to the Emek hospital in Afula.

Large forces of police were sent to the scene of the shooting and the highway was closed in both directions from the Movil to the Golani junctions.

Northern Region police chief Commander Ya'acov Borovsky and Ammakim distcrict chief, Assistant Commander Ya'acov Zigdon, went to the scene and held a press conference late on Sunday night.

It appeared from initial findings that the gunmen had intended to carry out a terrorist attack that was thwarted by the actions of the border policemen.

The incident occurred during heightened tension and intensified security measures following the killing of Gaza Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi on Saturday night and amid numerous warnings of attempts by terrorist groups to carry out attacks on the eve of Independence Day.

Earlier, Police in the central Israeli town of Modi'in lowered the red alert placed on the area late Sunday night.

The alert was raised after intelligence reports indicated that a Palestinian terrorist had infiltrated the area.

A massive police manhunt was underway in the area.

The security establishment has registered over 50 terror alerts since the killing of Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Police are on nationwide alert lever 'C', one level below emergency level.
